seems I had 2 apple IDs at some point. the old ID I stopped using many years ago. but I still have some music I bought under that apple ID. I'm unable to play that music now without a password which I no longer know. any way I can get it to play this music again? I don't have the old password nor do I have that email anymore.

Sounds like you changed your email address and set up a new account rather than using the normal channel.

You should be able to go into iTunes and advise of the problem to get your purchased music back. Start on the Get Started at the bottom of the page:-

The old account still belongs to you whether or not you use that email address. There was lots of confusion (blame Apple for this) when Apple began assigning or asking folks to create an Apple ID. Many folks at the time were using me.com or mac.com as their email address and were not aware that they could also assign that as their Apple ID account. It could no longer be used for email but was still good as an Apple ID.

Get in touch with Apple and ask them how you can restore the password or change it for that old acccount. If nothing works or Apple refuses, then you're out of luck and will have to purchase the music again.
