iphone 5s won't download pics to macbook pro

I recently updated my iphone 5s to 10.3.1. When I connect to my macbook pro 10.6.8 and iphoto opens it doesn't download my pics and I get a window saying "Photos on the Camera Roll cannot be viewed or imported because the iphone is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iphone to view and import them."

When I enter my passcode it still doesn't download my photos. I even tried entering the passcode before plugging in the usb but it still won't download.

What am I doing wrong?

Was going to suggest using Photo Stream but that didn't come in until Lion (MacOS 10.7).

I'm nut sure if this will work with 10.6.8 but can you see the phone and its photos using Image Capture? Here are some other ideas as well
