I have an aging iMac which I have always backed up to an external hard drive using time machine. I now would like to transfer all of my doc, music and photos to a wireless external drive (LaCie Fuel) which I plan to access from my iPad. The process was explained to me as a matter of dragging and dropping the files onto the new drive but this is proving impossible to do. It seems the time machine is stopping the process from happening. I am a bit of a novice so hope someone can help me achieve this

Welcome to our forums.

You can not drag and drop individual files or folders from one drive to another when the files and folders are stored within a Time Machine backup. Apple does have a procedure you can follow so that you can copy the Time Machine backup to the new drive. Read and follow the instructions in this Apple KB article.

If you want to transfer all of your doc, music, and files, why not drag them from your Mac and take Time Machine out of the equation?
