There are many ways to do it, however, without knowing anything about your Mac or the iPad, here are some suggestions:

1. Use Dropbox

2. Use iCloud

3. Use AirDrop

4. Email it to him using Mail Drop

The file will be useless for an iPad. An iPad can not open or read a dmg (disk image) file.

True, but we have no idea what the receiver of the file intends to do with it.
