APPLE MAC PRO 2*XEON DUAL-CORE 3GHz

can anyone tell me if this would be a good computer to pick up for $100 and are there any upgrade i can do to it. would like to use it for video editing it is a late 2008 APPLE MAC PRO 2*XEON DUAL-CORE 3GHz

I think that there needs to be some clarification on exactly which model Mac Pro this is. The term "dual-core" is only associated with a 2006 Mac Pro...not 2008 Mac Pro's.

Please clarify which model Mac Pro this is...and then we can discuss further.

The 3GHz is a model 3.1, released 2008 if I read your thread correctly. It is a powerful machine,but will not run the latest operating system but you can install El Capitan OS X.11.6. With an upgraded video card and at least 16GB of memory it would do the job okay.

There's also a 2006 "quad-core" 3.0ghz model ( 2 x 2 dual-core). This is why I was unsure if this computer was a 2006 or a 2008 Mac Pro.

With that additional info it is a 2007 Mac Pro 2.1 and Lion OS X.7 is as far as it can go without making it a Hackintosh. No I would not buy that model.

I sold my 2.1 in 2011 because of its limitations.

Definitely agree with harryb2448...this Mac Pro is not a good choice. Too many limitations.

You need to tell us what you consider "a low cost Mac"? What is your maximum budget?

We would also need to know what your intentions are with the Mac? Mac Mini could be worth it?

Not really. It is ten years old, and for today's use has minimum memory, slow processor and slow graphics for today's use. Sorry to be blunt.

If you were looking for an iMac I would suggest nothing older than say a late 2013 model, i7 processor preferably, 3TB hard drive with a 128GB flash storage, at least a 2GB graphics card and 16-24GB of memory.

Do you actually mean a 32lb beast of a machine Mac Pro, or a MacBook Pro?

Assuming Mac Pro, nothing earlier than 2010 with at least dual2.4GHz processor, and 2.66 and 2.93 even better. These have Intel Xeon Quad processors, models E5620, X5650 and X5670 respectively.

I think you have to accept what you wish to do is not a cheap exercise. This type of Mac Pro is going to cost maybe up to two grand!

As the others have been telling you it depends on what types of video projects you will be doing. If all you plan to do are short YouTube videos that can be done on iMovie then a newer iMac with an i7 processor and at least 16gb plus an SSD will do the trick. If you plan to make longer videos with a lot of special effects then moving to a Mac Pro and apps like Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere would be better but as Harry said you are looking at $1500 to $2000 at least to get the performance you would need.

I edit video on a daily basis. My main editor is a 2010 Mac Pro with dual 6-core Xeons and 64GB of memory plus two SSDs. One for the startup drive and the other as the scratch/cache drive plus an array of storage drives. That system cost more than $3000.

One option would be to watch eBay or Craigs list for good deals. If you are set on a Mac Pro the least you would want would be a 2010. The 2010 to 2012 models basically are the same as Apple did not really make any huge changes in the models. They can run the latest OS version Sierra. If you go earlier the system would need to be modified - a 2009 model can have its firmware updated to make it run as a 2010 model. 2008 models can be modified to some extent too. But now you are into some risk taking and researching. Check out Macrumors Mac Pro forum and see what others have done.

It really would help if you would give us an idea of exactly what you want to do. I have found when someone says they want to do videos that statement means different things to people.

Another good surce of Mac Pros is Mac specialists OWC (macsales.com). The machines are all checked prior to advertising. These are great buys if you are in the US, but not so hot if you have to pay for International shipping, and, in my case, 15% import tax:-
