http vs https: how to get on the LAN??

Our school has just blocked all Macs from the LAN, however we can still use IM, all the internal pages and any webpage that begins with https. I heard there is a way to bypass their blocking of the web from Macs by setting up a proxy server or something to that effect. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I had to find a Windows Machine to post this! Thanks!

If there is a linux box around and you can surf from it, you can install SQUID which is an open source Webcache/proxy.

They are not. It is very likely they installed a proxy server, thus the http but no https. If you can get the settings for the proxy or the location of the pac file you should be able to go out fine, with the same limitations as the windows machines.

I didn't think they could do that :)

Do you know if any of the Windows machines on the network are failing too?

The http vs https for a proxy you mean? that is how all proxies work. You can't really proxy https since it is by nature a point to point encryption. The best you can do is limit what https you let out to prevent the use of bounces and such.

Again chances are they are not "blocking macs." Pac files are automatically found by IE generally. OS X on the other hand does not autodetect pac files.

At a guess you are using Safari? Try downloading firefox then under preferences => connection settings set it to autodetect proxy settings. Then shutdown and restart firefox and see if you can get out to the web over http.

Safari uses OS X settings for proxies, which requires some setup. Firefox on the other hand has the ability to autodetect proxies, following the same basic procedure as IE. This might allow you out, though without knowing more of your schools network that is just a guess.
