The main icon bar on the bottom of my screen (El Capitan) has a solid grey background which can be changed to a dark background. Is there any way to make this background transparent please?
I can find no other options?

This is called the "Dock".:)

Here's an app that's supposed to allow you to customize the dock (including transparent):

https://sourceforge.net/projects/cdock/

If you would like to search for other simiilar apps...make sure you include the term "Dock".:)

Hmm...I'm on El Capitan. My Dock is transparent. I don't have any options to make it solid, or grey, or dark.

Unfortunately the Dark Mode only changes the Dock from light grey to dark grey.
Nick i had a look at the link you posted and downloaded the cDock app just to check it out but when I launch it it states: "I must first disable rootless". It then gives instructions on how to do this. While reading through the instructions a new window opens (see below). I am a bit iffy about installing such things so what is your opinion? Is this app harmless, can I uninstall it if it causes a problem?

Hey there Rod. I only supplied the link above for cDock because the OP seemed very interested in modifying the appearance of the Dock. I personally don't like to mess around with customization apps like this. Don't like to take the chance of 3rd party app's like this causing potential conflicts/instability with the Mac OS.

Me neither Nick. I think I'll just stay with the dark grey one.

Hey Rod:

Don't waste your time with cDock. It doesn't work with Sierra even if you turn off SIP (rootless). It worked fine with El Capitan but not with Sierra unless the developer updates it.

Hmm, thanks. I am giving it a miss, had it been a little less invasive I would have given it a try but I don't feel like restoring my computer today.:D

Even if you tried it, it would not harm your system. It just refuses to change the dock. It's really too bad because it was a great little app to modify the dock. Maybe the developer will update it sometime in the future.

MightyGem, did you do an upgrade or a clean install of El Capitan?
