I followed the prompt to update my OS (el Capitan) and it is now Yosemite 10.10.5... what happened and what do I do?

Are you sure you were on El Capitan? Your description block seems to indicate you were perhaps on Yosemite 10.10.4 and now are on 10.10.5. OS updates do not go back, that's just not how it works.

That was an update, not an upgrade. Yosemite to El Capitan or now to Sierra, is an upgrade.
