@John

A warm welcome to Mac-Forums.

Don't want to appear awkward, but I think that the way to "Disable Automatic Login" or, rather, choose "Automatic Login" is in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Options.

As stated, you will need to click on the padlock > Admin PW and then choose "Automatic Login". This appears to be the way in El Capitan anyway.

Many thanks for all your input but when I get to the Automatic Login using both methods advised the Auto Login box is greyed out and will not allow me to change the option.

You need to have a computer administrator change those settings. Did you click on the "Lock" in the lower left corner? Then type in the admin's user name and password.

John is this inquiry for your machine you have had for a while, or regarding a newly bought machine? If the latter case suggest downloading your own copy of El Capitan, erase and format the drive after backing up, and doing a clean install.
