so frustrating how my openoffice.org, word document can take up 100% of “% CPU” in my activity monitor. Admittedly the document is 648 pages long and is double columned in every page. Sometimes it takes so long, > ~ 1 min if I want to search for a date, phrase or word even. many times can't find it, even though the searched item is there. It is usually ~0.9% to 4% of “% CPU”, is this because the file is a lot for my mbpr to handle? I can always split it into 3 files. it is purely text and I have no other software open. Please comment. thanks

Open Office itself has been unsupoorted for some time since many of the team left to establish Libre Office.

They have released Apache Office 4.1.2 which may help. At the end of the day this is freeware and I do not think it was ever designed for such a large document.

thanks harryb2448, so I will try this version you recommend, if that don't work, maybe split it up into 3 portions and hopefully it will be trouble free. Is there a recommended software that is problem free for large text documents?

Nothing that's free. But if you want something that easily handles large documents, try Scrivener. I've seen it bundled with other apps and discounted but that was a while back. Currently it's $45.00 US.

harryb2448 , since updating to latest, as you recommended, it seems problem free ie finds text quickly. hopefully it will stay like this for many more pages on. problems do appear again when l choose "web layout" under "view". any idea why?

Gandalph, are your documents over 600 pages double columned?

Sadly Applet 'free' equals what you pay for performance wise. Did your MBP come with Pages when new? I do not like Pages personally and always use Microsoft Office.

No, not over 600 pages. But I do have some very large files. Three of them are closer to 350 pages of which some are double columned with Design graphics and they open in a matter of a couple of seconds.
