should a java update be downloaded for my mac?

I run a trading software with a large brokerage. It requires java and occasionally I will be asked if want to update. been using since had mac a few years ago with no problems l think. does the old version have to be deleted if l do update? if so how. please advise

Yes, you should update. The installer i believe removes the old version - can't remember right now. But with all the potential security issues that can crop up, keeping it up to date is a good thing.

Use the control panel in System Preferences to check for updates. And yes, if you have to use it, keep it updated.
