how can I get toast external cd/dvd drive in 2009 mac mini with damaged smart
drive.

We need a bit more information. Are you trying to get the application Toast to recognize an external burner? If so, that should work although you have to select the external drive. It does not do that automatically. There is a drop down menu at the bottom of the screen ("Destination"). Click there after you insert a disc into the burner.
