Can anyone recommend a cheap software program that is Excel friendly. I am using a MacBook Air with OS X El Capitan 10.11.5

Give LibreOffice a try. it's an open source office suite that includes a spreadsheet program called Calc.

Just in case it wasn't 100% clear. Libre Office (and Open Office) are free!:) Is this "cheap" enough??;)
