I was shocked to find that the summary page (present in preceding version) containing information on my phone's memory, preferences for backup, and ways to trigger backup, restore, sync, etc. was missing. If Apple wants me to use File>Device> on the pull down menu, I cannot, because all options for backup, restore, sync, etc. are greyed out - even though my phone is plugged in by USB and is recognized by iTunes. The Photo App springs to life, and makes a good transfer to my Mac, but after this, I'm stumped. Can anyone help?

The summary page/section is there. When your phone is connected a phone icon should appear just below the volume slider. If you click that icon the Summary page should appear.

Not exactly easy to find as it was in the previous version. I too got a bit lost with the new version especially when I couldn't find the summary information. Yes it's available when your devices show up in iTunes. And by the way, they (your iDevices) do not have to be attached via USB as they should appear in iTunes as long as your WiFi network is up and working.

iTunes works exactly as it has in the past. What the latest version has added is that in the sidebar there is a "Devices" section. But that is NOT where you select the device to get the summary page. That select function is still on the menu bar, the little icon that looks like a rectangle (I guess it supposed to look like an iPhone or iPad). From that icon you select your connected device. Apple needs to learn to be a bit more helpful when they change the interface like that. A good set of release notes would be useful. Minimalism isn't always the best way to go.

Thanks so much for your reply. It was spot on! I wonder why the pull down menu has the items after Devices greyed out. I don't need them now, since I have the summary page to work from, but I am just curious. Maybe Apple had it that way, and then thought better of it. Thanks again!!

Thanks for that info Charlie. I hadn't thought to check that when I made the post about how to find the summary page.

Another example of "Apple knows what's best for you". My bet is that it will be changed back in a future update. Too much confusion and too many complaints across the spectrum.

I can't remember which version of iTunes introduced the minimalist approach, but if it was bad for Mac users, it was 10 times worse for those unfortunate souls using Windows versions. The version I'm talking about was the first to get rid of the sidebar by default. That was (more or less) fine on a Mac, but I think someone at Apple forgot that Windows menus are part of the window, and not always visible at the top of the screen. The Windows version carried the minimalist idea even further and made the menu bar invisible by default.

The result was that, in order to turn the views back on, it was necessary to press the "alt" key to make the Windows menu visible, then go into the View menu to turn it on. It was not exactly an intuitive process.

Not sure where things are now. I've pretty well dumped Windows.
