Last night I tried to share some video clips(from iPhoto) via email, and get the message "videos cannot be emailed." Next I tried to send them via "messages" and it says "iPhoto does not support sharing video to Messages." I know I've done this many times in the past, and am wondering what has changed. I'm running Mavericks 10.9.5 on my iMac.

I can imagine that the latest Sharing APIs starting with Mavericks don't support iPhoto anymore - have you considered upgrading to the Photos app?

No, I have around 20,000 photos in iPhoto on my iMac, and also have Aperture. I've shied away from updating to Yosemite or El Capitan because of that. Looks like I might have to though, if I can't share stuff any more. I updated my iPad to ios 9 last fall and it ruined it. Seems like they want you to use the "cloud" but the cloud doesn't work when you're without internet.

You do realize that both iPhoto and Aperture are no longer being updated by Apple and it's possible that support for either will end at some future date? Moving 20,000 photos can be a task, so if you do decide to update make sure you make a good backup before doing so. Also, if possible copy your photos to another media source just to be double safe.
