So I just got a Sony RX100 MKIII and have quickly filled up my 750gb internal HDD on my mac... I also have tons of music and a boot camp partition I could delete but I really think I need something external.

I kind of want a fast portable drive to work off from...

I have also thought about setting up a NAS, mostly for lossless music for a Sonos system but the I would only have access to the content when on my network, the other issue is how fast is a network? I always see speeds advertised, and stuff saying it's as fast as a wire, but anytime anything important needs to get done it's always with a wire..... I'm thinking a 7200RPM USB 3 or Thunderbolt portable drive might be the best. There are fast raid drives but the you double the theoretical failure rate... The store I work at carries the WD Passports pro but its $300 and I would only get like a $30 discount....

A Thunderbolt portable drive would be your best and fastest choice, however, not the cheapest. You might check with Mac Sales (OWC) and see what they have to offer. www.macsales.com

What makes 0 sense is most TB portables are 5400RPM only, the only 7200RPM ones I can find are USB 3.0

Two solutions on this page::)

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Thunderbolt/External-Drive/OWC/ThunderBay-4-mini

Just saw that you were looking for a more portable drive…so maybe these solutions won't work.

I think that the solution you found is a good one…as long as 1 terabyte of storage will work for you. This drive is most likely a 2.5" drive (for weight, size, and footprint savings). I don't think I've seen a 2.5" drive that's 7200rpm…AND is more than 1 TB in size.

OWC does have a 2 terabyte 2.5" drive…but it's 5400rpm:

With this you could have 2 terabytes of portable external storage. Get yourself an empty 2.5" Thunderbolt case…and stick this drive in it. Of course a bit of a compromise (slower 5400rpm…but you get 2 TB of storage).

They do make internal 7200 2TBers I think
