how to connect MacBookPro to my work desktop?

Hi Bill and welcome to the forum! 
First, please provide information on your computers (model/year) and what OS X is installed - is the desktop a PC or a Mac?
Second, you should be able to create an 'ad hoc' network between the two machines w/ a variety of options - just google 'OS X ad hoc network' for plenty of hits - if you desktop is a PC, then you'll need to use some different terms, such as 'os x to windows ad hoc network' - good luck. Dave
