Using Mac FaceTime for phone calls doesn't work

All,

I'm trying to use my MacBook to make and receive phone calls.

Did a search which walks me through it. but ran into the following problems:
Have to access Preferences in FaceTime, but it's greyed out, and can't find any solution for that. Erased key chain info. Someone said to erase the iMessage key chain things too but I don't have iMessage.

Also says to click Audio in FaceTime.... I don't have Audio there.

Help?

Check out this link that offers some troubleshooting suggestions.

I also found this discussion that said that two step authentication can create issues. Also some found Messages had to be closed. Just check out this link and see if anything applies.

You do have "iMessages," but its called "Messages." The program Messages generates iMessages, but also handles conventional SMS.

Your FaceTime preferences are probably inaccessible because you didn't click on the lock and give it your admin password, which is how you make changes to system preferences.

I'm sorry to hear you got tricked into erasing your keychain ... a lot of valuable stored passwords just went bye-bye because of that. Hopefully you'll remember them all so you can eventually rebuild.

I never use Messages, didn't know it was the same as iMessages. I don't have a lock on the FaceTime preferences, unless I'm missing something? The preferences are in the FaceTime app, not system preferences.

No, I didn't erase all of my keychain, I'm stupid, but not that stupid..... And what I did, is still in the trash, so easy to get back, but did no good regardless.

Still looking for a solution... thx!
