I'm trying to install a Samsung 850 Evo on my Macbook Pro 2010. I'm having a problem when I connect the drive to my computer, it say's the drive is not recognizable. I haven't been able to find anyone with similar problems so any help would be much appreciated.

Check the SATA cable which goes from the SSD or HDD connector to the logic board. That cable is very fragile and always suspect when a problem such as you're running into occurs.

It all seems to be connected fine. I'm connecting it externally with a Sabrent 2.5" SSD & Sata hard drive usb 3.0 enclosure. It just say's that the disk is not readable by this computer. I then hit initialize and I get the disk utility manager. After that my only options for the disk are to hit erase or first aid. I'm not able to hit partition.

Ah, so it's recognizable, just you can't perform some tasks. Different problem. Are you at the higher level on the drive in Disk Utility? You don't partition the indented, that IS a partition. You partition at the most-left entry for the drive, the physical level.

I'm not very tech savvy so excuse me if I ask or answer in a dumb way. I'm not sure what you mean by being in a higher level of the disk utility

When it appears in Disk Utility, hit Erase and Format Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Go into Partition > Options and select GUID. That may get you going. If you do a search of the threads, in Advanced Search box, for Samsung EVO you will find there has been some problems with MB and MBP recognising that drive. The problem seemed to be on several the Samsung is SATA III or 6Gb/ps and your MBP is SATA II or 3Gb/ps. Whilst SATA II is supposed to be backwards compatible, it may not always be the case.

What I mean by "higher level" is that when you open Disk Utility, in the left column you will see the devices listed and indented under each will be the logical drives (Partitions) that are on that physical device. You create partitions at the Device level, i.e., the name that is NOT indented. You format at the Indented level, which are the partitions. I've attached a picture of my system where an OWC MercurySSD is partitioned with one partition named Macintosh SSD. Does that help?

Do you think I should keep this SSD or would I be better off getting something that is SATA II?

Ask Samsung. Another forum member who was having similar rproblems Samsung advises the drive was not compatible with his MBP. They have forums.

If you all were to upgrade this 2010 Macbook Pro, what would you recommend for an SSD?

And I agree with Administrator chscag. OWC and Crucial are Mac specialists and if you read the links to others problems with Samsung EVO, I do not allow anything Samsung in my house after failed plasma TV, camera, fridge.

What SSD would you suggest so that I may get the optimal performance from my computer. I had also picked up two 8GB (16gb total) memory replacements, do you think that is a good choice or is it overkill?

OWC will recommend the best for your Mac. They are Mac experts. I'd suggest asking them either by Chat or phone.
