I have a mid 2012 macBookPro with a 2.5.GH Intel Core i5 processor. I wanted to upgrade from 2 2MB chips to 2 4 MB chips. Tec Rep upgraded to 1 8MB chip and said I could upgrade to 2 8s later. 1. Will the single 8 work as well as the 2 fours? 2. Will the single 8 work OK? 3. Is it true this machine could be upgraded to 2 eights? Thanks, Technopeasant.

Yes it is true. This MacBook Pro can be upgraded to 16gig of ram (with 2 x 8gig ram sticks).

The arguement regarding matched pairs has always been that they will access memory faster as matched pairs, and most authorities who have tested this say the increase is about 10%. Just Google advantages of matched pairs. If the machine has been upgraded to an 8GB module, leave it at that and throw in a matched module as soon as you can afford it.
