Point of confusion: why does my Mac not offer to save my password on this site?

When you log in (when entering userid & password)…click the "Remember Me" box.

That doesn't work. After I posted I cruised the "similar threads" (I know, wrong order...) and I see this issue is not unique to me.

Hmmm, the site remembers me!

It never remembered me. On any browser. I don't worry about it, I use 1Password.

It remembers me, though I'm not sure if this is due to a cookie or the keychain.

If it is due to a cookie, then clearing cookies or having a program that does this for you will of course cause your credentials to be wiped and you'll need to re-enter them when you log back on to the site.
