n00b Question: FFMPEG help/what is it?

Okay, I'm apparently a n00b about this but please be kind. :confused:

I want to convert some RMVB files to AVI or MPEG2 format so I can watch them on TV through my DVD player. I've read here that FFMPEG is the way to go for converting video files but I have no idea what it is or how it works. I even downloaded it but still have no idea what i downloaded?

Is there anywhere that I can go to get BASIC/n00b tutorials or walkthroghs for FFMPEG? I'm guessing I'm gonna need to learn some other stuff first but that is totally cool. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :flower:

No I haven't (until now). I googled ffmpeg and didn't find that within the first 5 pages and kind of gave up. Thank you. It explains almost everything I had questions about.

Unfortunately , it will no encode from my rmvb files. I'll need to figure out how to do that next.

You need to download and install the Real codecs for ffmpeg. Dont remember where I got them, If I find them, will post a link here.
