fake firefox upgrade warning

firefox 39.0. OSX 10.6.8. I manually typed in the url for malwarebytes website, pressed enter, and this page came up. not sure why or how or what it means, if anything?

you can see the url it went to at the top and the one pressing the update button was linked to on the bottom left.

I'm guessing that you mis-typed the URL and the domain you went to is designed to make use of that (I've seen this happen a few times). If you try to navigate to the site from somewhere like Google, do you get the actual page?

I got nothing when I used Safari 7.1.7 to goto: helpingtrk.com/base2.php, or http://helpingtrk.com/base2.php, or http://helpingtrk.com

But got this when I used: whois helpingtrk.com
How to fix helpingtrk.com redirection?Internet Security & Malware Removal Instructions
from a hit from https://www.google.ca/search?client...&oe=UTF-8&gws_rd=cr&ei=A46-VYD7N8K3oQSYwZ2QDA

"The site helpingtrk.com is engaged in causing a lot of annoying browser redirections to random websites engaged in adware distribution. We’ve recently seen a lot of ads displayed in various websites we went to. When moving the PC mouse close to such ads we saw that helpingtrk.com domain is engaged in redirecting these clicks to some other third-party websites related to all sorts of adware networks and channels. …"

just a note, I was getting these under snow leopard. now that I've installed Mavericks, will be interesting to see if it happens again.

Check your FF Preferences for your option set for any updates.

I don't use it much but they say they do an update every 6 weeks, which seems more like almost daily in my experience. Mine is set for me to do the install.

And another large larger update version number awaits me again it seems when I just opened it to check. :\

It'll be more regular than every six weeks if you're on the beta channel.

And remember, basically every browser has a new version in that time period. While Safari only has a new major version every year or so, bug fix updates are pushed out every 1-2 months. ;)

mine is now set to upgrade automatically. I disabled that once, and I had firefox 21 when version 26 or so was out.... and I did get the fake update message during this time. now Im update as soon as it comes out.

Not to get too OT on browser updates, but I've never really got my head around or understood the reason of Safari/Webkit and the "WebKit Nightly Builds".
WebKit Nightly Builds
and
The WebKit Open Source Project

I recall using it a bit in Snow Leopard days, but never did understand what it was all about. Maybe just too geeky for me, but it sure does get updated often enough. :)

Does Apple actually eventually use it or parts of it when it does a update for it's OS X???

Addition:
I guess I can always go googling to find out… :[

The nightly builds of WebKit, Firefox and other products is basically a "here's the most recent stuff we've got." It's great for people trying to get ready for the eventual release of a new stable version.

OK. Thanks for the info.

Great for those on the extreme bleeding edge I guess. And that's definitely NOT me… ;) :) :D

Dude, where's the sense of adventure in that? Doesn't everyone love booting the system and not knowing what will break in the browser? :D

Actually, in all my poking/experimentation with the Mac I've never bothered with nightly builds.

I had enough adventures many years ago thanks, now I like some stability as I'm well into my senior years now, and just the recent OS X and the newer hardware and software give me enough excitement and adventure just using it daily and wondering what's going to happen.

Gheese, just on Friday my Safari suddenly just stopped showing visited site URLs in a different color I finally got fixed yesterday. That was more than enough adventure for me thanks!! ;) :) ;D
