SO, anyone been to The Safe Mac lately?
It's all MalwareBytes now. Did someone sell out?
Anyone know what happened?

I think this line from the recent post sums it up:
The timing could not have been better, and I’m pleased to say that AdwareMedic and The Safe Mac are now owned by Malwarebytes, and I’m now the Director of Mac Offerings at Malwarebytes

Hmmm...that post wasn't there when I looked this morning.
Well, that explains it.

It was either Kaspersky AV or windows defender that called Malwarebytes spyware for windows. I hope that this isn't a bad metamorphosis.

Both Kaspersky and Windows Defender are worse than malware. I wouldn't give anything they say any kind of creditability.

I have to say that I can't really think of a much worse, associated name to use than Malwarebytes for a good Mac product.

That should scare a lot of potential uses away, but thanks for the heads-up notice of the change which I guess I might have eventually seen.

As it is an update of AdwareMedic suppose we use and recommend that now and delete AdwareMedic.

I said this around a year ago and got blasted but I will say it again. Malwarebytes is an outstanding Malware application for Windows systems. It's one of my tools to find Malware and has never let me down. I could care what any one else says or thinks. I know many VERY good computer techs that 100% agree with me.

The others range from bad to worse! :D

I 100% agree with what Charlie posted above and Chas 2nded.

You can just bet after donating to Tom, the new owners will introduce a charge. Got to keep the shareholders happy!

It can and does happen in the software world but I sure hope Tom gets his fair share if and when it does, or that any donations are honoured.

Meanwhile I see it got posted to macupdate.com today with a link to and from it's old name and the AdwareMedic version all commenters are still using so far.

Reason I don't think they will do that is I have been using their free Malware app for years and never been charged a penny. There is a full version that does even more that is pay, but the free version has always been free. Time will tell I guess.

I've used the PC version about a half dozen times in the last year to remove malware for friends, families, and co-workers. Made me look like a real genius when all I had to do was install the program and let it run for a few hours.

That reminds me of this - looking like someone "in the know" while doing very little. ;)

What's wrong with Kaspersky? I haven't used it in over a decade, but it used to be pretty darned good (talking about the Windows version, of course). Relative to the competition anyway.

Not sure about Kaspersky although on OS X I have heard it's sort of a hog resource wise, but Norton and McAfee are the worst out there. I got a simple toshiba for my Windows 10 testing and it had McAfee. It was horrible and sucked the poor dual core CPU so bad I could not do a thing! I zapped it the 2nd day! :D Once I zapped McAfee the machine works great!

Oh Norton and McAfee are certainly the worst on ANY platform, and have been for decades. Back in my usenet days, I was a regular in a computer support newsgroup, and we had a big discussion one week about AV software. PC Magazine had done a big roundup and eventually awarded Norton their "coveted" Editor's Choice award, despite the fact that Kaspersky caught more malware than Norton did and Norton had more false positives. What a joke. Anyway, the general gist was that Kaspersky had the better track record, with its major shortcoming being that the UI was a bit awkward, though most of the regulars preferred the free AV software that was popular at the time (forget who it was, but they were the first to give it away with a premium paid option available). It could be that Kaspersky has tanked since then. Heck, Symantec used to make good software, but that's going back 20 years or more.

EDIT: as an aside here, if you haven't noticed, ClamXav is no longer free.

Norton for me died when Peter Norton left. Right after that I saw a difference and stopped buying it.

Yep, when Peter Norton sold out to Symantec that's when I stopped buying anything with his name on it.
