imovie won't allow me to import .mov

For some reason my copy of iMovie 7.1.4 (iMovie '08) won't let me import .mov files. They are grayed out. Can I fix this by upgrading to a newer version? I'm using a MacBook Pro circa late 2009. Thanks!

You could try converting them using something like Handbrake. Try the "universal" preset in Handbrake to see if that solves the issue.
