Funny and sad...

The proverbial sensationalist headlines "Apple and Google 'FREAK attack' leaves millions of users vulnerable to hackers…" etc. etc. are humorous if not pathetic considering it's been around for over ten years now and takes a heck of a lot of computer horsepower and considerable time and money to even exploit, and maybe some like NSA and their like might have used their resources, but it mostly seems like tin hat stuff to me.

The article said that it takes about $100 worth of resources which isn't a lot (in the grand scheme of things) and given the ease of access to infrastructure (the article even mentioned leveraging Amazon's), I'm not sure we can say that this is expensive and hard to do. I'm also not sure that we can easily dismiss this because it's been possible for ten years and in fact, if anything, this signals oversight on the part of Apple and Google when it comes to closing up something that could have been plugged years ago.

For those interested, you can test your browser here (to save you the suspense, word on the street suggests that only Safari is susceptible on the Mac and iOS devices). This doesn't test servers though (obviously) which you can do on the same site.

Opera is also susceptible.

Hmm, I didn't see that but then again, no one ever seems to talk about Opera anymore...
