Mac Users - have you experienced a pop-up message from what appears to be Safari, indicating your Mac had been infected with a virus and that you should call 877-416-4271 immediately?

G'day and welcome to the forums.

1. Don't ring.

2. Empty cache, remove history and quit Safari.

3. Power down router and restart.

4. Download and run in scan mode AdwareMedic.

5. When all is good download and run in Safari Extensions AdBlockPlus and Ghostery.

These dumb pop-ups have been around since the first web page came up. Installed Adblock, Flashblock and Ghostery on your browser and be rid of them..

Thanks for the responses. I'm looking for anyone who (1) has received this message (2) contacted this "company" and had a fraudulent experience.

I'm sure there are many people that got the message but hopefully didn't fall for the act and actually call that number..

Your situation is not unique. Only thing that changes is the phone number. It's called "ransomware". You call the number…give them some info…they charge you a "fee"…and they "fix" a nonexistent problem.

If you want to "experience" a fraudulent experience…then learn the hard-way and call the "877" number. Otherwise listen to the advice given in this thread.

We've seen this situation many times. Just because it is new to you…it is NOT new to us!

The phone number is Apple's but the email is a scam put out by a hacker.

And another thing—if you call some of these numbers, they not only charge you and all the rest; they often tell you the "virus", "problem" can only really be sorted by your allowing them to control your computer remotely as then it would be so much quicker & easier for them to do it. This has been reported on these forums before.

the number I called was 855-789-6633 or 510-344-8495 I don't know which for sure. I called and talked at length with a man who ran a scan and found numerous problems and said it was a network problem and I'd have to get a certifies network guru and he connected me to Bryn who spent about 30 mins. cleaning my MacPro. I paid over $200.00 for his service. HAVE I BEEN DUPED???

NTS Fraud

Harry,

I used a debit card and it's already been taken out of my checking account. I FEEL LIKE A COMPLETE 'OLD' IDIOT

The first man I talked with showed me where someone in Korea was trying to get my personal information.

Sorry to hear this.

We do discuss these sort of things quite a bit. So please stay a frequent visitor of Mac-Forums. And when new scams come out (which they will)...you will know about them (and what to do about it) before you're a victim.:)

Yes, I'm in the states. I will contact my bank and thanks for information.

P.S.

I emailed the company -- they called me and they are charging me $70.00 for the work they did today and refunding the rest to me. He tried to assure me that this is not a fraud. I told him I didn't believe him and didn't trust him. His manager absolutely refused to refund all my money.

And Nancy, being a victim is really nothing to do with age or idiocy. Fact is, we all want to trust people. It seems alien not to, and there are far more good persons out there than bad....it's just a lot of the latter seem to be attracted to IT.

And we've all done it - well I certainly have and you feel a complete and utter dunce. Join the club, the only club that tries to have fewer members each year, thanks to the Forums. I hope the sting was not too painful. Sorry.

Nancy who was the company for future reference and to help other users, if you do not mind of course?

One of the commonest here is a call from "This is xxxxxx from Windows Technical Services ~ You have a probem with your computer. We will take charge of the computer and fix it for you. Now what is your credit card number?" Many of these eminate from Manilla in The Phillipines.
