When I tried to watch tv series on mac air the site said I had to download some program. It turned out to be a nasty program. Now I'm trying to watch netflix and screen says I must download MS Silverlight plug in. The tech I spoke to to clean up the last download said I shouldn't need to download anything to watch videos. Anybody have experience with Netflix requirements? Is Silverlight safe to download?

Yes…downloading "Silverlight" is exactly what you need to do to watch Netflix when using Safari.

That "nasty program" you downloaded probably came from a "bad" website. Some "bad" websites (like CNET for example) can be so confusing…that many times the wrong button can be clicked & the wrong thing downloaded. Its always best/safest to download from the original developers website.

Thanks. Good to know about CNet.

There are other "download sites" similar to CNET. CNET is just one example.

These websites themselves are technically not "bad". They are just setup in such a confusing way…that many times the "download button" for the wrong product is clicked…and this is how folks accidentally get "nasty programs" installed.

You do need to install certain things for videos. Flash for most, Silverlight for Netflix, etc.
However, some sites, mostly ummm....(porn), will pull the "you need to install this to watch" trick and get you to install malware.
You have to be careful about what you install and where you get it from. Especially on places like Facebook and the aforementioned questionable sites.
Scammers are everywhere.
