Hello all - my dad is a longtime mac user however he fell prey to hyperbole and installed "MacKeeper". I know, I know. I uninstalled MacKeeper and deleted anything I could find related to zeobit. He then had trouble with yahoo mail and safari, however I fixed that by simply turning off Javascript. All was great until this morning, when he tried to run Safari and instead a massive popup appeared with no visible way to close it, along with a tab in background. I can not click on the background tabs, I can't go to preferences, I can't close this popup and it appears every time he uses any browser he has installed (Chrome, Safari). I can visit this website with no apparent ill effects on my PC. I have tried google-fu however I am coming up empty and my Mac troubleshooting knowledge has run completely dry. Please help.

Intel G5, Mac OSX Yosemite

Get AdwareMedic, run it to clear out the popup. Then get either Adblock+ or Ghostery to block future adware attacks.

And Jim if you simply dragged Mackeeper to the Trash, that will never remove it. Have a read of this:-

Wow, Mackeeper is so powerful that it got rid of Harry's link..it really doesn't want to go away..;)

Can't even get AdwareMedic until that tab is dealt with. He has run into a site with a browser hijacker.

Force Quit Safari.
If using ethernet, unplug the cable
If using wifi - click the network icon on the menu bar and select Turn off wi-fi
Then open Safari and close the offending tab.

Adblock and Ghostery will help, but even they won't stop some of these type hijackers.
Think I run into these things about once every month or two.
And no, not on porn sites. :)

Thanks for the help guys. I ended up deleting the saved application states for chrome and safari and that removed the popup (at least long enough to try other things, it came back but at least I have an easy, temporary fix). I also followed the guide to remove MacKeeper but he's still getting the popups. I will download the suggested program to deal with the popups. Thanks again.

Incidentally, troubleshooting Mac problems is ten times easier than PC, but I'm sticking with Windows :p

Mac keeper attack?!?!

I woke my Macbook Pro up this morning and was greeted by a popup that said my computer would restart in n seconds, and I couldn't stop it. Next thing I knew I had Mackeeper running, and then various popup ads started to appear. I was quite P'd off because I never, ever accept mackeeper offers when I see them, and I don't know how this stuff was loaded. Last thing I downloaded was an Adobe Flash update, 3 days ago. I read this thread and was going to uninstall mackeeper, but I can't find it anywhere on my mac! Neither can I find anything named "zeobit". How in the world can I get rid of this crap????

This is the ONLY time in 3 years that my mac has been hacked. MUCH, MUCH BETTER than windross, but I'm still not happy with turn of events.

Thanks,
Charlie

Probably not hacked.

Warnings have appeared on the forum about downloading from CNET, Softonic etc. They have the nasty habit of adding crapware to the downloads. Getting like the Windows scene ain't it?

Download and run AdwareMedic, and when all good, also download AdBlockPlus and Ghostery.

Maybe I've been lucky, harry, but I could NEVER run windows without some type(s) of protection software running in the background. One way macs are getting like windows, though - OS updates don't seem to be without problems or inconveniences for "old" machines.

I loaded the software you suggested and mackeeper and the popups are now gone.

Thanks,
Charlie

From my view, the big difference between the Windows arena and OS X arena is that the malware in the Windows world is more malicious, destructive and insidious. In the OS X world, so far, it's more annoying than truly malicious. It may hijack your browser, or try to threaten to encrypt your hard drive, but so far it's all just annoying, not real. Not to say it can't get worse, but at this point OS X is a lot less worrying.

You did misread. He said mackeeper and the popups are gone.
Not really. It's impossible to determine the intent of the statement on its own, as it is missing the appropriate punctuation. However, having read the prior posts, one can make an educated guess as to where the comma belongs.

Which is what I did, toMACsh. I read the post in context of what had been said previously. Sometimes I guess correctly...the blind squirrel theory.
