dock problem

The download icon disappeared from my dock I guess when I tried to drag it to
desktop...

Yep, that's what happens when you drag anything off of the dock.

"Assuming" you have a question there of "how do I get it back?".
Open Finder and drag the Download icon from there back onto the right hand side of the Dock.

Anything that appears on the Doclk is simply an alias, or shortcut, to the original, whether it be in Applications, Utilities, Downloads etc. Dragging from the Dock and things go up in that puff of smoke. That is the way the Dock is designed to work.

Normal location is the Download folder in the Finder.
