Can I use a 21" iMac as second monitor for new Macbook Pro?

Currently I have an iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009), Model Identifier: iMac10,1

I plan on buying a Macbook Pro this year, maybe even this week. If I buy now, it will probably be the 13".

I need the laptop for a beginning programming class at school. It needs to run Windows. I need the additional monitor space (run as an extension, not a mirror), to make the coding process easier for me.

Ultimately, I will probably be buying a Dell Monitor, probably 23"-24".

I may just buy a $550 Windows laptop from Dell and get the Dell monitor.

But for I may also go ahead and buy the Macbook Pro now and, if possible for now, use my iMac as a second monitor.

Is this possible and easy enough to do? If so, what cable do I buy?

Thanks,

Zeppo

Nope can't do it. 2009 iMac's (as with all iMac models before mid-2011) do not have a video in port.

You can try using a software solution called "Screen Recycler".

Used external monitors can be had inexpensively via Craig's List. Even brand new...22-24" monitors are not very expensive.

Why limit yourself to Dell? Other than Dell's 30" display...I think that Dell would be one of the last brands I would pursue for a monitor (just me).;)
