Mustek makes cheap SD and MMC camcorders. They are suitable for low quality video for kids etc. They record in asf files that can't be read by Quicktime or iMovie. I've eventually found out how to do the conversion.
1. Download (correctly) ffmpegX, a shareware program.
2. Using ffmpegX convert the asf file to a DivX mencoder file having clicked audio track 1 in the audio bit. This new file will appear with .avi at the end.
3. Again using ffmpegX convert the DivX mencoder (.avi) file to a
.MOV mpeg4 file.
4. This file will play in Quicktime and can be imported to iMovie.
It sounds complicated but it's not too bad.
