on a PC you note pad what do you use in Mac. I've looked in applications and can't find anything.

What version of Mac OS? OSX? If so try Textedit. A lot more powerfull than notepad or even Wordpad.

Agreed with dtravis there. Use Command + Shift + T or the Format > Make Plain Text menu item to shed TextEdit's fancy bits.

If you want a more powerful text editor that is free, I recommend Text Wrangler.

Since you probably have tiger, spotlight it for textedit. It's great.
