• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.

Hey guys,

Quick question - I'm working with a director friend to cut together our first movie. But we're not huge fans of what iMovie provides, and we don't have a huge budget. Do you guys have some suggestions on where to get music that isn't going to land me in copyright jail? (I know they don't actually send people to jail for this, but I think you get my meaning)

Thx in advance!

If you have some basic music chops, you could look into getting Mainstage. That ships with a ton of loops and sounds that will help you make, albeit somewhat, original music. For $29 its a great value.

You can also license tracks from a library. Tons of options online for that. I'm currently diggin the royalty free music at Muserk.. They have a tool that you can upload clips and try out the music before you buy it.

Google for Royalty Free Audio/Music.

istockphoto has plenty as do most of the photo sites, such as depositphoto etc.

Not really a composer myself, so while Mainstage looks cool, I will probably go with Muserk. The site's cool - but what's the difference between say, the emotional playlist and the filter things? I think they're filters?

Cool, thanks! Can I buy a song in these places and then use them throughout my friend's movie, and then in the trailer? One license is good for that right?
