Message Number Icon Wont Go Away

When I read a message on my mac the little badge icon that is over the message icon in the dock doesn't go away. It is very annoying. Any suggestions. It is stuck on 2 messages showing but there is nothing new.

Do you perhaps have some unread messages. I mean old ones that haven't registered as having been read.

No, as soon as it comes in I check it. After reading the message it still does not remove the number icon from Messages in the dock. It has happened ever since downloading Yosemite

I was going to say to check the sidebar next to the various mailboxes for any number showing, and if needed select any and sort on the "•" and scroll for any marked unread --- until I saw the word Yosemite.

All bets are off in that case IMHO.

The problem is in messages not mail....seems to be a lot of issues with Yosemite though.
