Camcorder to avi?

I want to capture some home videos straight to an AVI file. The reason I want AVI is because I have a Baffalo Linktheater and that is what it likes best.

My goal is to sit down plug in my mini dv camera and import video striaght to an AVI file, save it, then play it on the player.

I have tried iMovie. Two steps, import and then export to avi.

Anyone have any ideas?

I think Avid has a free product like iMovie. Is it Avid Xpress DV? I'm not sure.

Anyway, my line of thinking is that since it is available for both Windows and Mac, that just maybe you could tell it to create and AVI file.
