i installed PithHelmet to try it out and I noticed there was a box that I could check to say that I had paid. I just checked it out of curiosity and now it seems PithHelmet is "registered." Has anyone noticed this before?

That is not a very effective way to get people to pay for the software. Based on the honor system I guess.

It used to be called "Shareware." Free software, pay if you want to.

These days, real shareware has been supplanted by Annoyware, Expireware, and Unlockware.
