When i open multiple files in Excel (or Word or PPT) , why do i always have to start at the root directory when selecting the file to be opened? Why doesn't Excel for Mac remember the specific directory that i had opened the previous file from? Help is greatly appreciated...

Mac Office will default to your "Documents" folder whenever you double click an Excel, PP, or Word document. When opening a second document, it defaults back to the same Documents folder.

If you double click on an Office document located elsewhere (other than your Documents folder) it will open in that folder. And again, the same folder if you double click another Office document. I'm not sure you can change that behavior, or at least I've never tried to.

Do you mean from the menu (File > Open) ?

Try clicking the disclosure triangle next to the name of the file in the Open/Save dialog box. Then try it. I'm not sure this is the solution, but I can't try it when I'm not at a Mac.

EDIT: Well, I tried this at home. I opened a Word file by double clicking on a document in my folder. Then I went to File >Open, and it did not present me with that same folder. So I navigated to the folder, and opened another document. Then I went back to File >Open and this time it did present the same folder.
