Hey guys, I'm just creating my bootable drive to hold my mavericks installer.

I can't find my USB stick that i normally use - Will it still work if i put the installer on my 1TB portable external HDD?

I am performing my very first clean install and I don't want anything to go wrong haha.

EDIT: Or, can I use a 16GB SD Memory card? or does it have to be a usb drive?

Any drive will work as long as it's set up to boot the OS X installer.

hey, thanks for the fast reply!

Could you explain further what you mean by "as long as it's set up to boot the OS X installer?"

Thanks vansmith.

As long as the bootable drive is created properly, it doesn't matter what drive it is. That's all I mean.

Make sure the SD card is of high quality. I purchased some cheap ones at a local discount store that wound up being throw away items after they failed. Be careful with SD cards as they generally are not as reliable as an ordinary flash drive.

The website has the instructions (the steps for creating the drive itself after you've downloaded OS X start about 1/3 of the way down).

Again, i still can't find the 10.8 installer as my macbook pro came with this version already installed.

It would have saved time if you had mentioned that fact prior to asking. ;)

You'll need to download Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store in order to obtain the installer. There is no cost to you to download it.

I do apologise haha. Sometimes i just assume everyone else knows exactly whats going on in my head.

I've tried searching for it on the app store and nothing comes up. Are you sure it's still on there available for download?

EDIT: just found it on the website version of the app store, but it's charging me £14.00 to download?

The App Store only lists the most recent version available. However, if you go to the Purchases tab, it should be there.

Read through this thread and pay special attention to solution # 3 because that's what you will need to do.

Even that didn't work for me. What I'm going to do is just ring up apple and purchase ML for £15 and then ask them to refund me the money - see if that works.

Let us know how it goes. It may be different because you're in the UK where their rules may differ from that of the US stores.

Mountain Lion was a free update so would inagine not necessary to purhase.

You're thinking of Mavericks Harry. Mountain Lion was $19.99 US, Lion was $29.99 US. Mavericks is free and so will be Yosemite.
