Can I take the RAM from my non functioning 2009 MacBook (two 1bgs) and put them in my 2008 MacBook? Is there something that I need to download in order to do this?

If the ram from the 2009 meets the specs for the 2008…yes.

2008 MacBook = Memory Slots 2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM

2009 MacBook = Memory Slots 2 - 200-pin PC2-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM

As you can see.... the memory module requirements are different. Your 2008 modules will not work in the 2009 MacBook.
