i heard that duplicate fonts can slow down the entire computer. i know i can "resolve duplicates" in font book and disables the extra ones. once it disables certain extra ones can i then delete the extra ones that it disabled?

Yes, too much font can slow down some programs, Office is a good example of that. Use FontBook to delete de extra fonts, if you disable them they won't appear in FontBook and it would be hard to look for them in Finder.

weird in my font book (tiger 10.4) once i click "resolve duplicates" it just disables them but they are still visible (just faded). question for anyone...should i just disable them or can i delete the ones it disables. i am kind of hesitant and dont want to delete something i might need.
