On the second monitor, you should have the following dialog show up. You should be able to use the Rotation drop-down and change the orientation?

Not all monitors support rotation. You sure yours does?

my monitor can physically be rotated and my W7 laptop can rotate it. i have some pictures.

thats the easy part

then i open the settings

a close up of the screen

then it all goes sideways

as you can see the main screen (the built-in) is in portrait as well, thats not what i want

Umm..if you want the HP to be in portrait mode, you have to actually rotate the physical monitor. Otherwise, you will get what you have right now..

You shouldn't rotate the main display, leave that as standard..

thats the issue, there is no point in physically turning anything until the 13" built-in stays in landscape mode when i have the HP in portrait mode. i cant get the HP to be in portrait without the built-in jumping on the sideways boat.
any guidance?

no, just extended. if mirroring was on then it would be noticeable in the 3 other pics before everything goes sideways on me.

You need to be in "extended desktop" mode.

right now its not mirrored

and now its still not mirrored, just extended

so your telling me that when i rotate the HP screen, the whole system goes into mirrored and i have to set it back to extended? thats kinda stupid.....

This is very strange. I have an external monitor connected to my 27" iMac. I've turned the external monitor 90deg and have set up the Mavericks the same way and my iMac stays in landscape and the external is in portrait...

I have a MacBook Pro with an external monitor attached...this setup is running 10.8 (Mountain Lion) in extended desktop mode. With OS 10.8...there is not an option to rotate the MacBook Pro's built-in display...ONLY the external display.

I also do not recall being able to rotate an Apple laptops builtin display with previous OS versions. So unless something has changed with OS 10.9...you should not have the option to rotate the MacBook Pro's builtin display.

Did you happen to install some sort of 3rd party screen rotation app?

It's probably best to be sitting in front of the computer setup in question while having this discussion. Otherwise we are "spinning our wheels"...since you are not able to verify or modify the settings on this setup at the moment.:)

i got this MBP from my sister-in-law after she tried to drown it with a wide-mouth water bottle. but i dont see anything that would do that. not under system preferences, or under the launch pad (where all of the apps are)
