thumb drive between Mac and W7

i have alot of data on a 32GB thumb drive that i would like to use on my mac as well as on my w7 laptop
but my issue is that when i open a file on my mac (that i made on my W7 laptop [an word document]) it says that it doesnt have permission to edit the file
on my W7 laptop its Office 2010
and on my MacBook Pro its Office 2011
can anyone tell me how to fix this issue?

That's because your Windows notebook computer is using NTFS as its file system which is read only by your Mac. Word files from Office 2010 are compatible with Office 2011 on your Mac, however, in order to edit the file you copied, you must change the permissions on the Word 2010 file.

Highlight the Word 2010 file with the Finder, right click on it, select "Get info". Toward the bottom of the dialog box you'll see the file permissions. Change the read only to read and write for yourself.

If you do a lot of file exchanging between your Mac and PC, it's best to use Paragon NTFS which will take care of the file permissions automatically.
