did this change since 10.2.4? i went to change Finder.png in the dock and it didnt change.

Put the new icon (Finder.png) i wanted on the Desktop then....

su
cd ~/Desktop
mv Finder.png /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/

then:

cd /Library/Caches
rm -rf com.apple.dock.username.cache (or something)
logout

then i logged out and logged in and low and behold the old one was still there. anybody have any idea? this was how i always did it in 10.2.3 and it worked fine

A small question when did you copy in the new finder.png?

Put the new icon (Finder.png) i wanted on the Desktop then....

su
cd ~/Desktop
mv Finder.png /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/

then:

cd /Library/Caches
rm -rf com.apple.dock.username.cache (or something)
logout

I see the move, unless that is when you placed in the new finder.png.

The real trick is removing the Finder icon from the Dock altogether...

Try downloading Candybar from http://iconfactory.com . You can change the finder and trash icons for free.

No, not changing them. Removing them from the dock altogether is the goal. Especially the Finder icon; the Trash would be a nice fringe benefit as well.

Sounds like he wants it to change it to me but a way to remove the finder icon you would have to quit the app and drag it out using TinkerTool to add a quit command to the menu that appears when you right click the icon.

I'm saying we have different goals. He wants to change them; I want to remove them.
Candybar is the easiest solution for changing them.

I don't want the Finder icon at the head of the Dock; I would rather have YADAL's icon at the fore.

I want to remove the Trash icon so I can replace it with a custom application I am developing (Trash+, which provides a trash caching functionality for easy data recovery of deleted files).

well you might not Trash+ if the rumors about 10.3 and its ability to recover data.
