My MacBookPro is about 2 years old and it's starting to have some episodes where is locks up and it is generally running slow. I do not know how to go about cleaning it up. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks,

How much drive space is used/free? How much RAM? Running any utilities in the background like AV software and the like?

It's typically not necessary to do any "cleaning" on a regular basis in OS X. There's a freebie called Onyx with some maintenance/cleaning utilities that can resolve some issues, but answers to the questions above "may" be more enlightening.

What are the circumstances when it locks up and runs slow? Is it consistent? How much memory do you have, how much free space on the hard drive? Has anything changed lately?

And the fundamentals, what MBP, what version OSX, etc?

EDIT: Oops, I see lifeisabeach beat me to in on memory and disk space.
