LaCie drive full after Macbook Time Machine restore

I did a Time Machine restore for a few days earlier. When the new backup started, the Lacie external drive said it didn't have enough room for the backup. Usually old backups are deleted to make room for new backups. Does anyone know about this? Thanks for any help.
