Somebody has sent me an indd file which I can't open. Is there a relatively inexpensive application that I can use either to convert or to open and edit it?

Assuming it's an Adobe InDesign file and you're happy it's from a reliable source you can try this.

Nope. It's an InDesign file, and only InDesign will open it.

Tell your sender that you don't have InDesign (or at least the version needed to open it) and that they need to export the file as either a) a format compatible with what you have or b) a PDF (you won't be able to edit the PDF but you'll be able to view and annotate it).

EDIT: MrPlow offers a good suggestion but that's only for viewing, not for editing.
