Read the story carefully. It is basically a press release for IBM. Right now it is all hype. "...scheduled to be available next year..." Remember all the production problems IBM had with the G4 & G5? It could be 2 years or more (if ever) before this chip is actually in a computer. Given Steve Jobs attention to detail and management control he would have known about this.
1. These aren't PowerPC's. The POWER instruction set is slightly different, so they can't just be dropped into a Mac.
2. They say "low power" but they mean "low power for a server chip." Compare with Sun's Niagra/T1 ("most eco-responsible processor ever created. It's a breakthrough discovery for reducing data center energy consumption, [...] drawing about as much power as a light bulb, give you the best performance per watt of any processor available.")
That chip uses 72+ watts, which is great for a server.
The gist is that IBM can produce some seriously impressive technology when motivated to do so...maybe Apple just couldn't motivate them to do so. I just think the general consensus running around is that Apple dumped IBM...I'm thinking that it might have actually been the other way around...and sure...it's just a press release...but it is still fun to speculate. Even Jobs is human by the way...

IBM uses them in its high-end servers and supercomputers; they're sold mostly to government, telecommunications companies, banks, and other Really Big Companies.
IBM have been producing technology like this for years (relative to the technology available).
The diffirence here betweent he POWER systems and G5's is that G5's have to work in systems like iMac's and PowerMacs AND at a reasonable price. AKA $100/$300
POWER servers only really have to worry about heat and power usage but can charge a huge amount for this technology AKA $3000/$10000.
They can do big things when the money is there to do it with.
