Wow. Good question.
I just assumed that Mac Mail was ingrained.. could not change default and that Gmail had to be accessed via browser.
Will definitely keep an eye on this thread.

I will "assume" you are talking about the default account you want to 'send' new emails...
Not too many of us still running 10.6 - should be in similar location.
