System Preferences > Users & Groups > select the user > Change Password...

If you are using an already existing account, I'd suggest setting up your own and using that.

Two options.
1) Have them tell you what the password was and then reset it.
2) Hopefully you got the original media, Snow Leopard, that came with the Macbook Pro, so take that hold down C during boot up, and use Disk Utility and erase everything and do a clean install and set whatever password you want.

My recommendation is for #2. You don't to have stuff left over from the previous owner, even if they are a friend..

Suggest as other offer formatting the hard drive and do a clean install from the Snow Leopard DVD.

Getting it off a friend and him/her leaving their password on there for you is silly of them in the 1st place. As others have said clean OS on now your machine and set your own.

If you've already been using the machine and do decide to format and re-install, make sure to backup your data first.

For his security and your own, wipe that drive, reinstall the OS and set it up as a new machine.
